Athletes Today Getting Paid
On Wednesday, September 15, 2021, the NCAA allowed a ruling that unlocked college athletes getting paid for the first time in history (Dolan). Students can compensate off their name, image, and likeness. Some athletes are doing this by autographs, signing endorsements, making podcasts, and using social media. Student-athletes can now use their platforms to help market themselves as speakers, personalities, influencers, and publishers. The following athletes are just a few who have taken advantage of the NIL rule and its advantages.
Shaun Shivers, Indiana University Football
Shaun Shivers announced his sponsorship with Yoke, which is a platform that allows the athletes to play with and against their fans.
Will Ulmer, Marshall Football
With help from the NIL rule, Will Ulmer was able to really start his music career. He was able to announce on social media that he can now host live shows under his real name.
Gable Stevenson, Minnesota Wrestling
Gable Stevenson was able to make a deal with the delivery service GoPuff. He is also able to be part of the WWE roster and make money while still defending his NCAA title.
Dontaie Allen, Kentucky Basketball
Dontaie Allen has decided that he will make his own merchandise now because he will finally be able to be compensated due to the NIL rule.
Lexi Sun, Nebraska Womens Volleyball
Lexi Sun partnered with REN Athletics and which is allowing her to release her own clothing brand. The name of her brand is The Sunny Crew.
Hayley Cavinder, Fresno State Basketball
Hayley, along with her sister Hanna Cavinder both became spokespeople for Boost Mobile once the NCAA allowed the NIL rule to be set into play. Their endorsement even made headlines on a billboard in Times Square
