Open discussion question:  Is it fair for college athletes to receive compensation while playing at their school?

  B) Introduction- A better understanding of athlete compensation

  1. What is athlete compensation?

  2. Fact about athlete compensation:

           i) Athlete compensation is when student-athletes get paid for their name, image, and likeness.  The name, image, and likeness rule (NIL rule) is a law that allows students to earn money through autograph signings, endorsements, and advertising.

  • Talk about the amount of time athletes put in

  • Talk about the amount of money athletes bring to school

  • Talk about how much money the NCAA makes just from March Madness

    • Ask students to give any opinions or ask any questions they might have

Activity One: Split the class in half and have a debate between the pros and cons of paying college athletes

  • Each side will get a sheet of paper that lists the pros or the cons of athlete compensation, depending on which side they are on, and will use what is on their paper to discuss their side

  • Mr. Zontine will be asked to be the judge of the debate

  • Quote 1: “Colleges, universities, the NCAA, and others generate substantial revenue from the labor of student-athletes. Not paying them amounts to theft and exploitation” (Compensation”).

  • Quote 2: “Many schools are using their money earned from collegiate sports for re-investments and balancing their budgets. If they had to start paying players, the most probable result would be other programs suffering. They might risk cutting certain campus needs and degrading campus quality” (Miller, Brandon).

    C) Video on College Athlete Compensation

  • 5 minutes of a Youtube video will be played discussing the college athlete compensation problem

  • Students will discuss what they learned from the video
